Dr. Maryan Qasim is a medical doctor, a humanitarian and a politician. She worked as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist as well as a University lecturer and a community activist in Somalia, Yemen, the Netherlands and Great Britain for more than 30 years. She served as a Minister in various Federal Governments including serving as the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in 2017; serving as the Minister for Human Development and Social Services, which included the portfolio of Health and Education in 2012 – 2014. She also served in 2010 – 2011 as the Minister for Women’s Development and Family Welfare. She has also served as Goodwill Ambassador for the Campaign for Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA) in Somalia in 2014-2017. Besides Somali, Dr. Qasim is fluent in English, Dutch, Arabic and Italian. She is currently working as a senior consultant for UNFPA on maternal health. She is also the Head of Office of the UNFPA Garowe Sub-Office.
